Hossana or Hallelujah?

For JESUS CHRIST, Our Savior took the Journey for us!

'Hossana’ is a Greek word and in Hebrew is ‘Hoshan nah’. Hosanna is a word used in many songs of praise, particularly on Palm Sunday. It is found in the Holy Scriptures such as when the multitudes shouted as Jesus entered Jerusalem in Matthew 21:9 which says “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

This word 'Hosanna' is often thought of as a declaration of praise, similar to ‘Hallelujah’, but it is actually a plea for salvation while they expressed their joy and praise for deliverance granted or in anticipation when Jesus came to Jerusalem for his final presentation of himself to Israel. The Hebrew root words are found in Psalm 118:25, which says, “Save us, we beseech you, O Lord! O Lord, we beseech you, give us success!”. The Hebrew words yasha (“deliver, save”) and anna (“beg, beseech”) combine to form the word that is “hosanna.” which means “I beg you to save!” or “please deliver us!”

During that moment of Jesus Christ entry to Jerusalem taking His journey to the Cross, those multitude from whose lips "Hosanna" rose, seem to have looked on Jesus as God's anointed one from the house of David of whom the prophets had spoken and through whom they hoped that all their messianic expectations would be fulfilled. GOD, our Father in Heaven heard their Hossana as their prayer of hope in Jesus and Jesus declared they are forgiven from their sins, not because of what they done, but because what Jesus did. Jesus declared His mission: “It is finished!” (John 19:30)

Today, it is but proper for us who believe that we attained salvation through Jesus Christ death and resurrection more than two thousand years ago. Hebrews 10:10 states that “ And it is by God’s will that we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” If we believe that Jesus is also our Passover Lamb, and He also died for us, we are surely part of what they beg for us two thousand years ago. And thus we should shout ‘Hallelujah!’ in these days. Of course believing is not merely saying, but it should manifest that the love and forgiveness that Christ brought for us is in us. The true ‘Living in the Holy Spirit’ people in our time, should shout 'Hallelujah' to exclaim gratitude and praise to our Savior Lord Jesus Christ for what He has done. Unless we are not sure or doubting that we are saved, we still shout 'Hossana' with hope to GOD that we are part of His plan of Salvation and will be a part of great multitude that is perpetually rejoicing in Heaven as written in Revelation 19: 1-8 which says:

The Rejoicing in Heaven

1 After this I heard what seemed to be the loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying,

“Hallelujah!

Salvation and glory and power to our God,

2 for his judgments are true and just;

he has judged the great whore

who corrupted the earth with her fornication,

and he has avenged on her the blood of his servants.”

3 Once more they said,

“Hallelujah!

The smoke goes up from her forever and ever.”

4 And the twenty-four elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God who is seated on the throne,

saying,

“Amen. Hallelujah!”

5 And from the throne came a voice saying,

“Praise our God,

all you his servants,

and all who fear him,

small and great.”

6 Then I heard what seemed to be the voice

of a great multitude,

like the sound of many waters

and like the sound of mighty thunderpeals, crying out,

“Hallelujah!

For the Lord our God

the Almighty reigns.

7 Let us rejoice and exult

and give him the glory,

for the marriage of the Lamb has come,

and his bride has made herself ready;

8 to her it has been granted to be clothed

with fine linen, bright and pure”—

A great meditation in this Lent would be; “ Shall I begin still praying ‘Hossana’ because as a sinner, I am not sure to be part of the finished work of Jesus Christ in the Cross so that I may end rejoicing Hallelujah because my Savior Jesus Christ also took the journey for me? Or ‘Hallelujah!’ Praise the Lord for I believe although it is impossible on my own to be saved, your worked it out victoriously once and for all, and now I have Salvation in You!

Be blessed everyone. AMEN
