Trust Not in Your Heart, but in the Lord With All Your Heart

Proverbs 3:5-7 (RSVCE)

“5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,

and do not rely on your own insight.

6 In all your ways acknowledge him,

and he will make straight your paths.

7 Be not wise in your own eyes;

fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.”

Lord Jesus Christ said in John 4:23-24, “ But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” According to Jesus Christ, the Messiah, GOD, the Father is looking for worshiper/s who will worship HIM in “spirit and in truth’, not in ‘heart and in truth’. For GOD had already examined humans hearts and HE finds humans heart deceitful.

Jeremiah 17:9-10 says,

“9 The heart is devious above all else;

it is perverse—

who can understand it?

10 I the Lord test the mind

and search the heart,

to give to all according to their ways,

according to the fruit of their doings.”

Jesus also said in Mark 7:21-23, “ For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil intentions come: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.” Our wisdom and sanctification come in trusting the truth, the Word of GOD. Jesus offered and entrusted His disciples' sanctification to GOD, the Father, in the truth; His word as the truth. And for their sake, Jesus also sanctified Himself the same way, so that they also may be sanctified in truth. (John 17:17-19)

In the absence of Truth which is the Word of GOD, we often heard from this worldly advisers saying, “Just follow your heart!” And often times, those who followed their hearts, failed! No wonder why there are great numbers of broken relationships; children tend to disobey their parents, and husbands and wives tend to dishonor their matrimony, friend cheats friend and so on to follow their hearts. They cannot deny the desires of their hearts because they cannot comprehend what is the true blessedness. How can anyone conceive the Beatitudes, the counsel of the Lord if they trust their own hearts? How could anyone understand that a person is blessed if he/she is poor in spirit, or mourning, or persecuted for righteousness sake? That being humble and offering peace instead of fighting for their own right has a better position than those who take vengeance and take actions just to get even with their opponent?

Psalm 1:1-2 says,

“1 Blessed is the man

who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,

nor stands in the way of sinners,

nor sits in the seat of scoffers;

2 but his delight is in the law of the Lord,

and on his law he meditates day and night.”

The man with true wisdom is the one who trusts in the Lord with all his heart, and NOT trusting his own heart and mind. This means we have to surrender all desires of our hearts to GOD and let the Spirit govern it. “Your own desire leads you away and traps you. Your desire grows inside you until it results in sin. Then the sin grows bigger and bigger and finally ends in death.” (James 1:14-15) We have to trust not ourselves but only the LORD completely through His Word. It is just simply saying, “If you trust yourself alone, you are not wise.” You maybe called the devil incarnate. If you think you are GOD because you trust only yourself, then you only think that you are GOD, the truth is, you are not GOD and what is in you are full of lies. (Ezekiel 28:1-2)

In this world, many students became better than their teachers, but not in the Spiritual world. In the New Testament, the Chief priest, Pharisees, and teachers of the Law fall short on understanding the scriptures. (John 3:10) And from the mouth of the greatest teacher of all times, Jesus in Matthew 10:24 spoke about this, “Students are not better than their teacher. Servants are not better than their master. ” Who can only fathom the best for us? Only the Spirit of truth. 1 Corinthians 2:10-13 says, “God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For what person knows a man’s thoughts except the spirit of the man which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who possess the Spirit.”

Trusting our own hearts has its own consequences and trusting the Lord has its rewards. Jeremiah 17:5-8 says,

5 Thus says the Lord:

“Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals

and make mere flesh their strength,

whose hearts turn away from the Lord.

6 They shall be like a shrub in the desert,

and shall not see when relief comes.

They shall live in the parched places of the wilderness,

in an uninhabited salt land.

7 Blessed are those who trust in the Lord,

whose trust is the Lord.

8 They shall be like a tree planted by water,

sending out its roots by the stream.

It shall not fear when heat comes,

and its leaves shall stay green;

in the year of drought it is not anxious,

and it does not cease to bear fruit.”

Our God is amazing GOD and HE assured the good things ahead of us if we put our trust in Him with all our hearts. HE loves us and we can hold on to His promise. HE affirmed in Jeremiah 29:11-13, “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me; when you seek me with all your heart.” AMEN
